Moments

Wed Mar 11, 2009, 2:09 PM
This is the final version. I'm using this a monologue (under happiest memory category), performing in a couple of days. Yes, it's an entirely true story.
------------------------------------

There are certain, perfect moments in life, that make all our less-perfect moments worth it. The first chocolate chip cookie out of the oven. Finding the perfect pair of shoes. Leaving the first footprint in the Christmas snow. Those nights that you want to dream about forever, only because you can't relive them every day.

This was one of those perfect nights. The sky was a light, pearly gray, that glows even at 2 in the morning. Cloudy, but undeniably warm; it was soft, cozy even. The perfect night for a walk, as long as you're not alone. And that night, I wasn't - you were with me. The perfect friend.

We went to the park, along the bike path, like we always did. We sat in the bowl, sometimes talking, somtimes just laying together, listening to our hearts beat almost perfectly in time. We almost didn't notice when the fox showed up. He trotted circles around the rim of the bowl, guarding us from the world. He paced slwoly, watching us, but unafraid. I remember how surreal it felt to sit there, eyes locked with such a beautiful creature. Eventually he just melted away. We wondered the next nday if he had even really come.

We ended up lying on the little pier in one corner of the park, watching the leaves swirl by in the water. For a long time, we were quiet. It was comfortable silence; we didn't need words to know what the other was thinking. To this day, I can't imagine anywhere I'd rather be than lying there with you.

I was a little sad when we had to get up to go home, but you were still with me, and so the moment was still perfect. We talked the whole walk home. I don't remember a thing that was said. I don't think it really matters. You were with me, and so I was happy. And then the most amazing thing happened: it started to snow.

And yet, it still didn't feel cold. We marvelled at it. We could see the snow drifting down around us, feel it landing gently on our skin, but it made no difference to the warmth enveloping us. You looked down at me; even before you touched me, I could feel your arms wrap around my heart, and I could have sworn the snow simply melted around me.

We stopped in another park along the way, to play in the snow. There wasn't enough to have a snowball fight, but we tried. I tried to make a snow angel, but again, there just wasn't enough powder on the ground yet. Eventually, you sat under a tree, exhausted from chasing me around as I tried to catch every single delicate flake I saw. I layed with my head in your lap, and you ran your fingers through my hair as we watched the snow slowly dance around us. The branches saved us from the snow. Running around, apart from each other, it had finally begun to feel cold, but laying together again under that tree, it was lke we were in a bubble of sorts, completely impenetrable. The world couldn't touch us there.

That night, you didn't kiss me and you didn't tell me you loved me. But that night, you didn't have to. You looked at me, brushed a single snowflake off my nose, and just held me. You said nothing, but you could have said anything, and it would have meant the same thing.

I love you.
